A dream turned to reality: Birth of Technopark

It was the last decade of the twentieth century. The time when the Government of India adopted a policy of economic liberalization and the growth of the global software industry during the 1990s’ began to make its presence felt in the IT industry. Gaining fervor from such dynamic changes, the Government of Kerala conceptualized Technopark. It was designed as an arena to foster the high-technology industries in the state. Technopark was set up with the support of Electronics Technology Park, Kerala—an autonomous body under the Department of Information Technology of the government.

Objectives of Technopark

The foremost objective of Technopark is to create infrastructure and support the development of high-technology companies. Spread as Phase 1, 2, 3 and 4, Technopark aspires to provide a perfect work space in terms of ambiance and quality to foster healthy and sustainable development oriented competition. It also aims at fruitful regional development establishing a vigorous synthesis between Industry, Government and Academia, based on persistent expansion and innovation.

A moment in Retrospection-Technopark and its beginning

Technopark, the pioneer IT Park in India is avowed as a result of the earnest efforts of the Government of Kerala. The park was set up even before the echoes of the IT boom reached the country. A fine combination of world-class ICT infrastructure, supreme human talent and the whole hearted support from the State Government helped Technopark to become country’s leading IT/ITES player .
The park has been inaugurated by the then Prime minister of India, Shri. P. V Narasimha Rao in the presence of Shri A.K Antony, the then Chief Minister of Kerala, Late Shri K. Karunakaran, the then Union Industries Minister and Shri P. K. Kunhalikutty, the then Industries Minister of Kerala. The decision to set up Technopark was taken during the regime of the then Chief Minister Shri. E. K. Nayanar and the then Industries Minister Smt. K.R.Gouri Amma, under the Chairmanship of Shri. K. P. P. Nambiar. Shri. G. Vijaya Raghavan was the founder CEO of Technopark.

Technopark Trivandrum Phase-1

Technopark Phase-I consists of 31 acres. Buildings inside Technopark phase1include Pamba, Periyar, Nila, Chandragiri, Gayathri, Bhavani, Thejaswini, TCS, Peepul Park, IBS Campus, Leela Info Park etc. to name a few. It continues grabbing the lime light being the IT power house of the country. It has achieved ISO 9002 standards and India’s first CMMI Level 4 assessed Technology Park. Currently it is the single largest IT Park in the country with 7.1 million sq. ft. IT/ITES built-up area incorporating the services from 285 companies. The amount of human resource could leave you awestricken knowing that almost 40,000 IT/ITES professionals work here.

Technopark: A truly International home

The State has witnessed many major IT/ITES companies setting shops and expanding their businesses. Major companies include Tata Consultancy Services Ltd., Infosys Ltd., Oracle, Cap Gemini, Accenture, Mckinsey & Co., Ernst & Young, Allianz Cornhill, RM Education Software, ICON Plc., RR Donnelley & Co., UST Global, SunTec., IBS, NeST, Toonz Animation, Tata Elxsi, Collabera, Revenuemed, Kanoo Group, Applexus, ITC Infotech, Alamy Images, etc., etc. Technopark also operates a Special Economic Zone in the campus with IBS Software Services and Tata Consultancy Services as the co-developers. IBS has already commenced operations while TCS is in the process of constructing their 1 million sq. ft. built-up space at an investment of around Rs 500 crores. Technopark Phase I Campus will have nearly 75,000 IT/ITES professionals when it is full.

Technopark as a major source of Income from IT.

Technopark currently exports more than 75% of State’s share of software. Out of the total revenue which amounts Rs. 35000 crores, Rs.27000 crores is contributed by the companies in technopark. Making the state and the nation immensely proud, the big brother of IT hubs continues its expedition.
