The Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) is joining hands with Intel Technology India to launch the Kerala chapter of Intel Tech Challenge, an innovation-in-education programme for school students.

Designed for students between classes 9 to 12, the Intel Tech Challenge Kerala 2015 aims to develop an interest in design, discovery, coding and computational skills among children through play and learn activities, thus spurring creativity, and scientific temperament.

The three-month long challenge has four phases: online ideation workshop, submission of the synopsis, Makeathon and the finale. The winners of the Kerala challenge will get a direct entry to the Intel® Tech Challenge – India, a national-level platform showcasing young ideas and innovations, to be held in December 2015.

Students can apply to the online workshop through the official website of KSUM from August 25. The workshop will introduce children to the range of online resources, new ideas and coding paradigms thus motivating them to come up with a unique project synopsis by the end of the workshop. Project synopses are expected to get submitted bySeptember 30.

Selected 100 participants will get a deep dive hands-on training, where they will have to detail the ideas and learn technologies from experts and evangelists of the maker community. Each project will get a technology kit consisting of a microcontroller board with appropriate sensors, SD cards and connectors.

Students will have to turn their concept into reality in the Makeathon to be held in October. Selected participants from the Makeathon will go on to the finale of Intel Tech Challenge Kerala, which will be held in November. Excelling projects at this event will go on to the Intel® Tech Challenge – India.

“This is an exciting opportunity for students to use development boards such as Intel Galileo with adequate mentoring and this will surely spark off an interest to develop their careers as designers, problems solvers, collaborators, communicators, innovators and producers,” said Dr Jayasankar Prasad, CEO of KSUM.
